Exeter City captain Jack Fitzwater has extended his contract to 2029. The defender joined in 2023, is closing in on 100 games and leads a side with six clean sheets in 11.

Exeter City captain Jack Fitzwater has signed a contract extension that keeps him at St James Park until 2029. The club announced the deal on 20 October.

The defender joined the Grecians in 2023. He was named club captain at the start of this season and, the club says, is now closing in on 100 appearances.

The deal at a glance

  • Who: Jack Fitzwater, defender and club captain
  • New contract runs to: 2029
  • At the club since: 2023
  • Appearances: closing in on 100, according to the club
  • This season: six clean sheets in the first 11 league matches

What Fitzwater said

“I’m delighted to sign the new contract,” he said. “When Matt and Marcus came to me and told me the good news, I was excited, and I’m really excited for the future.”

He said the offer as a whole had won him over. “The whole package appealed to me. I want to be a big part of the future and what the club is building, both on and off the pitch.”

He said settling in the city had been part of the decision. “Me and my wife are happy and settled in the area, and we’ve made Exeter our home. We absolutely love it down here.”

On the defence, he said the next step was turning draws into wins. “Hopefully, this season we can turn more of the 0-0s into 1-0 or 2-0 victories.”

He added that manager Matt Taylor, Dan Green and the coaching staff had told him to “go out and be unapologetically yourself this season”.

Why it matters for City

Defence has been the base of the season so far. The club’s figure of six clean sheets in 11 league games means more than half of City’s league matches have ended without conceding.

Fitzwater said the squad was “really close right now” and expected “more goals and more three points” in the coming weeks.
